Before winning the prestigious Archibald Prize in 2022, Dhungatti artist Blak Douglas collaborated with filmmakers to capture the creation of a deeply personal portrait of his Indigenous grandmother for the National Gallery of Australia’s Indigenous Art Triennial: Defying Empire. Set in his Redfern studio, the documentary provides intimate insights into Douglas's artistic process and his personal journey confronting intergenerational trauma. Through archival records and family photographs, he seeks to understand his heritage and identity, crafting a narrative that extends far beyond the canvas to explore profound historical contexts.
