Poppies Will Put Them to Sleep is an experimental film from a series that explores the topographical surfaces of the filmic image. The pixel data of each frame is analyzed and projected onto a spherical surface, where brightness is converted into a z-coordinate. Converting a 2D surface to a 3D object reveals the visual architecture of the moving image. The source footage is The Wizard of Oz (1939) from the poppy field scene outside of the Emerald City. The brightly colored and highly detailed 4K remaster of the film is transformed into a spiky ball, a reference to the many circles and spheres in the film: Glinda, the good witch, arrives in a glowing orb, the Wicked Witch spies on Dorothy through her crystal ball, the Doorman pokes his head through a circular pothole at the gates of the city, and the Wizard leaves Oz in a giant balloon.
