Firestarter - the story of Bangarra

Firestarter marks Bangarra Dance Theatre’s 30th anniversary. Taking us through Bangarra’s birth and spectacular growth, the film recognises Bangarra’s founders and tells the story of how three young Aboriginal brothers — Stephen, David and Russell Page — turned the newly born dance group into a First Nations cultural powerhouse. Through the eyes of the brothers and company alumni, Firestarter explores the loss and reclaiming of culture, the burden of intergenerational trauma, and – crucially – the power of art as a messenger for social change and healing.

BAREFOOT: The mark baumer story

The latest film from BBFF2015 Alumni Juie Sokolow (Aspie Seeks Love)  BAREFOOT is a touching and inspiring portrait of Mark Baumer, a writer and activist who walked barefoot across America in 2016 for over 100 days to protest climate change.

A prolific creator of unique social media content Baumer narrates his walk in self-recorded videos, in a voice The New Yorker praised as “reminiscent of Andy Kaufman”, sharing his offbeat take on life and showing others that we all can make a difference.

THE RISE OF THE SYNTHS

Narrated by John Carpenter, the film explores: "Why now, this nostalgia for the 80s that not only affects music but cinema and aesthetics in general? Where does it come from? And what will become of it?” Discover what Synthwave really is before it bursts into the mainstream or dies without glory!
